Barbados is an island nation of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean and a member of the British Commonwealth. Once a colonial possesion of Portugal, it came under English control in 1625. As with many Caribbean nations, black slaves were imported during the colonial period, primarily to work on sugar plantations, and high percentage of the present population can trace their lineage to these indentured people. The nation was granted independence from Britain in 1966.
The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) is the combined armed forces of this nation, and consists of the Barbados Regiment (an infantry unit), Barbados Coast Guard, Force Headquarters, and a cadet corps.
